Iceland
Part 2
July 12-14, 2005

The beginning of our trip from Reykajavik to Jokursarlon

One of the many waterfalls on the way

Lava fields, mountains, and glaciers

Characteristic mountain vegetation: short and colorful flowers

The peaceful village of Vik

Green pastures

The fingers at Vik

Picnic

Is the Skyr cup already empty?

Beautiful coastline with black sand

Jane and Jeff

Four of us: Jeff, Eugene, Jane, and Imola

And here is the fifth

Straight to the Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe

Funny moss-covered lawa flow on the way

It was extremely soft and comfortable

After some driving around, the hosts finally took us to the right cabin for the night

We could see the falls in Efri-Vik from our porch

Getting closer

The first glimpse of Jokursarlon, a lagoon filled with icebergs from Vatnajokull

A happy trio -- we missed Maja and the boys, though!

Christof

Many views, all unbelievable

Cold and pure

The bridge before Jeff's assault

The glacier in the background

Speechless

Ice meets water

And flows to the sea

Floating icebergs

Random shapes before yielding to the heat

Waves playing with the icebergs

Christof enjoying it

I examine the consistency

Lone berg in the sea

Black beach with ice

Enormous yet peaceful

The sun beind the clouds

Picnic in the evening

Can't stop taking pictures

On the way back to the cabin

Eugene preparing a delicious lamb and fish dinner

Setting the table

The view from our cabin

Midnight golf

Hmm.. How exactly do you hit the ball?

Let me try

Now it's my turn

I will show you guys

Perhaps next time :-)

Smiles for a great effort

Time to head to Skaftafell National Park

Parts of the glacier again

This is just a tiny part of it

Climbing an unfortunate bridge destroyed by the glacier

Impressive views

Plenty of waterfalls

Another creek reminding me of home (Transylvania)

Jeff the plant expert telling us about the flowers

With the surrounding glacier

Lava flow field to the Atlantic Ocean

Svartifoss falls

At the bottom of the falls

We had a great time and hope to return to Iceland one day
